Create an App Password

Thunderbird only requires your Thundermail address and the password that you set when you created that account to connect. However, third party clients may not support this method and instead require you to create and use a separate “app password” to connect manually.

If you’re using a different program that does need one or you keep getting invalid password errors when trying your Thundermail account password, here is how to generate an app password instead:

Setting the Password

  1. Sign in to your Thundermail dashboard.
  2. Scroll down to the “Email Settings” section.
  3. Click the “Create app password” button.
  4. Type the password you want to use into the “New password” field.
  5. Enter it again into the “Confirm password” field.
  6. Click the “Save” button.
Please remember to note this password. You will not be able to view or recover it later!

You now have an app password to use! With your Thundermail address, app password, and the other information shown in the “View Server Settings” section of your Thundermail dashboard, you will have everything you need to get your email client working. That app’s documentation should help if you get stuck past this point.

If you do ever need to change your app password or you forget it in the future, you can always reset it by clicking the “Change app password” button in the “Email Settings” section.
