We often hear from users who would like to change their primary account email address after creating it for a variety of reasons -- whether due to a typo during sign-up, a hasty setup, or simply wanting a fresh start!
Currently, you are not able to change this address directly. While our team is actively exploring future possibilities, this guide explains why this limitation exists and outlines the best workarounds available to get you set up with your desired address.
Why can't primary accounts be modified?
Your primary account email address does a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes. Our central identity system relies on this address as the root key connecting your login credentials, permissions, and saved data across Thundermail Mail, Send, and Appointments. Since so many services depend on this single core identifier, updating it directly isn't currently supported.
What else can I do?
- Use an alias: You are welcome to keep your primary account strictly for authentication purposes, but use an alias email address for all other sending. Our article, How do I set up email aliases?, will walk you through it step-by-step.
- Cancel and recreate account with Thundermail support's help: If you absolutely must change your primary address, Thundermail support does have a manual workaround that includes removing your current account's access and having you sign up again. This will involve purging your original account completely, so we do recommend that you back up any important data before we begin this process.
While primary email addresses remain fixed at this time, using an alias or starting a fresh account with Thundermail support's help will get your inbox working exactly the way you'd like. If you need assistance with a manual account recreation, please reach out to Thundermail support -- we are always happy to help!
