File Storage and Encryption

Want to know what happens to your files while using Thunderbird Send? We’ve got you covered:

  • When setting up Thunderbird Send, you created a special encryption key for your installation of Thunderbird. This key is stored in your Thunderbird Pro add-on’s local storage rather than in a keystore folder on your device.
  • When you upload a file through Thunderbird Send, it is encrypted using your key before it leaves your device, so it stays encrypted during transit and while being stored on one of our servers.
  • Files are encrypted via AES-256 standard.

In addition, the encrypted files are protected by TLS during transmission.

Thunderbird Pro is currently in beta. See something missing or incorrect in our instructions? Did you find a bug or have a great feature idea? Please let us know!
