Setting Up Thundermail on iOS

Until we’ve launched our official iOS Thunderbird app, we have detailed instructions here on how to set Thundermail up with your iOS device’s built-in Mail app in the meantime.

Creating an App Password

  1. Sign in to your Thundermail dashboard.
  2. Scroll down to the “Email Settings” section.
  3. Click the “Create app password” button.
  4. Type the password you want to use into the “New password” field.
  5. Enter it again into the “Confirm password” field.
  6. Click the “Save” button.
Please remember to note this password. You will not be able to view or recover it later!

Add Your Thundermail Account

  1. On your device, navigate to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
  2. Click “Add Account” and then “Add Other Account…
  3. For “Name,” enter whatever you’d like to help you remember later, such as Thundermail.
  4. For “Email” and “Description,” type your Thundermail address, such as example@thundermail.com.
  5. For “Password,” enter in the app password you set for Thundermail.
  6. Press “Next.”

Add Our Server Settings

  1. Make sure that “IMAP” is selected at the top to enter in your IMAP Account Information.
  2. For “Name,” type the name you want displayed alongside your messages.
  3. For “Email,” enter in your Thundermail address, such as example@thundermail.com.
  4. “Description” can be anything you like to help you remember what this account is for (personal, business, etc.).
  5. For the Incoming Mail Server “Host Name,” enter mail.thundermail.com.
  6. For the Incoming Mail Server “User Name,” enter your Thundermail address again.
  7. For the Incoming Mail Server “Password,” enter in the app password you set at the beginning of this guide.
  8. The Outgoing Mail Server information should default to using SMTP and match the above Incoming settings.
  9. Press “Next.” Your Mail app will then attempt a connection and you should be good to go to start receiving and sending messages through your Thundermail address!

Advanced Settings

If you experience a connection error, you may need to adjust some advanced options. To get there, navigate on your device to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Thundermail Account > Advanced Settings. Then refer to the incoming and outgoing instructions here.
