Why Won’t My Client Connect to Thundermail?

When setting up Thundermail in your client, you may see an error such as “Could not connect to server mail.thundermail.com; the connection was refused” or other similar messages that prevent your account from working.

You can check out our status page any time at status.tb.pro to make sure our services are running without issue.

If everything is operational (green), things are okay from our side! You can try the following to see if they fix your issue:

Troubleshooting Ideas

  • Do you have any anti-virus software or network security running? If you do, disable it temporarily and try connecting again while it’s off. Don’t forget to turn it back on later!
  • Do you have a VPN in place? Mail servers can sometimes ban users that use free and paid VPNs when they mistakenly detect a connection as malicious activity (even when it’s legitimate). Set your account up again when it’s disabled. If it still won’t connect, try configuring your VPN to use split tunneling before trying again. Here’s an example from Nord VPN on how to do so on their platform.
  • Do you use Thunderbird? Enter Troubleshoot Mode (Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode) and try connecting while in that mode.
  • Close your email client and restart your device.
