Would you like to use your own custom domain for your Thundermail account? You can absolutely do that! Thundermail currently supports up to three custom domains per account.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to set them up:
Adding a Custom Domain
- Start at your Thundermail Dashboard.
- Click on the Thundermail logo in the top right:
- Scroll down to “Custom Domains” and click “Add domain.”
- Under “Enter custom domain,” type out your domain, such as example.com
- Click “Continue.”

You will see a list of DNS records that you will need to enter in your domain’s settings at your registrar, similar to this:
- Open your registrar’s site in a new browser tab and log in to your dashboard there to make the changes (see the next section for help on how to do this).
- When you are done entering and saving the DNS settings at your registrar, come back to your Thundermail dashboard browser tab and click “Verify Domain.” If you closed the tab or need to check back at a later time, don’t worry! You can also use the side menu next to your domain and click “Verify” instead:
Depending on your domain’s TTL (Time to Live) setting, you may have to wait anywhere from 10 minutes up to 24 hours for the records to update at your registrar before it can be verified in your Thundermail dashboard. If verification fails, please be patient and keep trying.
If it has been past 24 hours and the verification is still failing, please contact us and we will help.

Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN) and Partially Qualified Domain Names (PQDN)
The domain verification in the Thundermail dashboard provides a "Fully Qualified Domain Name" (FQDN). This longer format matches a lot of domain registrar's dashboards as well. However, some providers (such as Squarespace and Namecheap) require you to enter a shorter format called "Partially Qualified Domain Name" (PQDN) instead.
The table below shows the difference in Thundermail DNS records using "example.com" as the domain:

Thundermail DNS Checker tool
We also have our own tool that can help you get everything set up correctly! Once you have our DNS records set up and saved on your domain, you can use our Thundermail DNS Checker.
- Type in your Domain (without the https://).
- Next to "Show fixes for," select your domain provider from the drop-down menu.
- Click the “Check” button.
- You will get a full report showing if each DNS record has been set up correctly. If there is an error, the tool will step you through the changes you need to make in your domain provider's dashboard.
